Why choose a puzzle tatami for martial arts?

In martial arts, the floor matters. A poorly cushioned fall is an injury, and an unstable floor ruins your technique. The EVA foam puzzle tatami solves both: it absorbs the impact and gives a stable, non-slip surface to train on properly.

The interlocking system is what makes it practical. The tiles join like a jigsaw, with no glue and no tools, and you set up or take down your training area in minutes. You keep the original floor intact, and you take the tatami with you if you change dojo or room.

What thickness of tatami should you choose?

Thickness and density work together, and the right choice depends on your discipline:

  • 20mm and 25mm (100kg/m³): firmer and more stable. Ideal for stand-up work and technique: karate, taekwondo, boxing, kickboxing.
  • 30mm (100kg/m³): a balance of firmness and cushioning, for self-defence and martial arts with some falls.
  • 40mm (80kg/m³): softer and with more cushioning, for judo, jiu-jitsu, MMA and wrestling, where throws and groundwork are frequent.

A note on density: the thinner tiles are denser and firmer, so they don’t compress under stand-up work; the 40mm is deliberately less dense, to better absorb throws. It’s the same principle the major puzzle tatami makers use.

Assembly and disassembly without tools

The puzzle interlock needs no glue, tape or fixing. You bring the tiles together, the teeth lock, and the area is ready. For most spaces you don’t even need to cut: you make the most of the modular system and fit the tiles to the space you have. Whenever you want, you take it apart, store it and reassemble it elsewhere. The tiles are reversible, with two different-coloured faces, to mark out zones or change the look of the room.

Not just martial arts

The same EVA foam that protects in combat works for other uses. For holistic activities like yoga, pilates and stretching, the tatami gives comfort and posture support without the hard floor. For playgrounds, schools and nurseries, it offers a soft, safe surface for the games and falls of younger children. And for the home gym, you set up a comfortable training area at home, with no building work and no fixings.

Simple cleaning and maintenance

The surface cleans with a vacuum and a damp cloth with neutral detergent. No abrasive products, no fuss. It’s flooring built for intensive, daily use in dojos, schools and studios.

Trusted by academies and studios

Installation and maintenance of EVA Puzzle Tatami Mats for Martial Arts

The Tatami EVA Tiles are pieced together like a jigsaw, and do not require any adhesive. The tiles can be installed and uninstalled at any time easily and quickly.

The tiles should be cut using an X-Acto knife. Make sure you measure the area carefully before cutting. Given the versatility of tatami, if possible, you should avoid cutting the tiles. This will enable you to install them anywhere, any time.

Tatami can be installed on any kind of ground, provided it is sturdy, level, clean and dry.

The product should not be installed on unstable ground, such as sand, gravel or earth.

Use a vacuum cleaner to start cleaning the entire surface to remove any dust.
Next, clean it with a mop or scrubber using a PH neutral detergent, so as not to damage the structure of the flooring.

The flooring is suitable for indoor use only. The tiles can also be used outdoors, but only during practice. Also bear in mind the weather conditions, and the state of the ground, which should be dry and clean.
